On Elmendorf Air Force Base, Sept. 22, 1995, a Boeing E-3B Sentry, Airborne Warning and Control System, aircraft from the 962nd Airborne Air Control Squadron encountered a flock of geese and crashed shortly after takeoff on a routine surveillance training sortie, killing all 24 U.S. and Canadian Airmen aboard. The Yukla 27 Memorial Park, located near the 3d Wing Headquarters building on JBER-Elmendorf, is dedicated to the memory of the Airmen who lost their lives that morning. Two rescued bald eagles make their home at the park and can be viewed by visitors.
