It is about the size of a child's head. You can see that the tree was cut (possibly a dead limb) and this fungus seems to be doing it's work recycling the dead wood. I find this amazing and beautiful all at once. In searching online, it seems to match Laetiporus gilbertsonii Burdsall, which is a California species.
