This time I've been dragged along to the Helsinki International Airshow at Malmi Airport. And what a great show it was too. Some lovely stuff flying, including the timeless Finnish Airlines DC-3 that I've longed to see flying for a long time. I also got to see the Midnight Hawks at last - that's the Finnish equivalent of the Red Arrows, and they put on a great show too. One of the prettier things though, and hence my photo of the day, was a very powerful FA/18 Hornet. We've actually seen the same pilot and display earlier in the year at RIAT, but what he wasn't doing there was this! Here he's deploying some kind of flare type affair, which may or may not be countermeasures to heat seeking weapons. Either way, it's rather pretty. The smoke you see around the fuselage is nothing to do with the fireworks though - that's the super high g turn squeezing some of the air to a condensation point. Very nice looking.
