Choosing the hardware was tricky, but given it was going to be a lot of distance work, I finally elected to break out 'the bitch', the 170-500mm zoom. Unfortunately the title applies as much to me as it does to the featured duck. I've got very little experience working with this lens, so I was having some trouble with focussing and a good bit more trouble with exposure. Still, it was a good learning experience. I got some fairly ok shots, but as my first outing at bird photography I can see why some people choose to specialise in it - it's such a demanding but rewarding discipline. I've a long way to go before getting shots I'm really happy with, but you've got to start somewhere. This little chap(ess?) was having a bloody good splash about in the water and one of the shots I got showed this bizarre collar of water round the back of the neck. There was no outright 'killer' shot to win photo of the day, so I've gone for this one just because it's a bit unusual.
