Tuesday was the 80th day on which the Fortress has been engaged on this type of work, the mission to be concluded after arrival and inspection at Cairns to-day. Since she set out on loan work, the Super has flown about 70 hours and covered 14,000 miles, during which time all the States of Australia have been visited. Known originally as the City of Patterson (New Jersey), the Fortress aircraft was stationed at Guam and from this base took part in 38 operational missions on large cities of Japan, including Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, Nagoya as well as many of the small islands. She also took part in one p.o.w. supply mission and, on the occasion of the signing of peace at Tokyo, "City of Patterson" was portion of the air cover for that historic event. In her flights over Japan, the Fortress has been damaged both by flak and also by enemy fighters. Brought to Australia, the plane was renamed Waltzing Matilda. This is the first visit of the crew to this country and they are enjoying their stay immensely. After completing her loan work at Cairns Waltzing Matilda will be flown back to Guam, but will first report to Brisbane where certain minor repairs will be carried out. The taking off place for the ocean hop to Guam will be Garbutt. Waltzing Matilda, has a length of 98 feet, wing span of 141 feet, height to top of rudder 80 feet. Fully load ed the aircraft weighs 70 tons. She is equipped with four engines, each of 2200 h.p.. The crew of Waltzing Matilda Is: MAJ G. A. Simeral (Officer In charge) 1LT James. W. The Liason Officer on the Fortress Is Flight LT Halse (RAAF) Members of the crew— all of whom are eligible for return to service—are hoping that on reaching Guam they will receive orders to continue the Journey to their heartland.
