The Canyon Towhee (Melopiza Canyonensis) is a medium sized bird in the family Passerellidae. It is non-migratory and primarily found in the southwestern United States, including Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, and western Texas, as well as northern Mexico. They have a length of about 7 to 9 inches and a wingspan of approximately 11 to 12 inches. The back, wings and tail are a rusty brown color while their belly, head and breast are a pale grayish-brown. The head has a distinctive reddish-brown cap on its crown. The dark-colored bill is thick and conical. Canyon Towhees inhabit arid and semi-arid regions with rocky terrain and scrubby vegetation, such as desert canyons, chaparral, and juniper woodlands. Their diet consists of insects, seeds, fruits, and occasionally small lizards or snakes.
