Colca Canyon is a canyon of the Colca River in southern Peru. It is located about 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of Arequipa. It is more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the United States at 4,160 m. However, the canyon's walls are not as vertical as those of the Grand Canyon. The Colca Valley is a colorful Andean valley with towns founded in Spanish Colonial times and formerly inhabited by the Collaguas and the Cabanas. The local people still maintain ancestral traditions and continue to cultivate the pre-Inca stepped terraces.

The Sacred Valley of the Incas or Urubamba Valley is a valley in the Andes of Peru, close to the Inca capital of Cusco and below the ancient sacred city of Machu Picchu. The valley is generally understood to include everything between Pisac and Ollantaytambo, parallel to the Urubamba River, or Vilcanota River or Wilcamayu, as this Sacred river is called when passing through the valley. It is fed by numerous rivers which descend through adjoining valleys and gorges, and contains numerous archaeological remains and villages. The valley was appreciated by the Incas due to its special geographical and climatic qualities. It was one of the empire's main points for the extraction of natural wealth, and the best place for maize production in Peru.

The tradition has spread to different areas of the country, in Mexico City there are also neighborhoods like Culhuacán and Milpa Alta where this dance is practiced. \n\nThe dancers are also known as “huehuetzin”, which means “the one who wears old clothes”, as they get their appearance during the carnival (at the end of February) using wooden masks and velvety robes. \n\nAt the beginning of the 19th century, the Creole and Spanish population excluded the indigenous people from the festivities and in response to the rejection, young indigenous people began to dress up and wear old clothes to imitate and make fun of the Spaniards who celebrated their carnival, that's how the youth began to disguise themselves by covering their faces and wearing old clothes of different colors to imitate them and over the time, satire began to be complemented with various elements, such as wooden masks that refer to the Spanish colonizers. \n\nThere are several interpretations of the word \
