The construction of the magnificent Duomo, a masterpiece of Italian Gothic art, began in 1290 under the pontificate of Pope Nicholas IV and was completed in the second half of the 15th century. More than 20 artists worked on the magnificent façade of the Cathedral during the two centuries of construction of the church. With a population of just 20,000 people, Orvieto is considered one of the most beautiful cities of art in Italy, founded since the Etruscan and Roman times on the flat top of a large butte of volcanic tuff. Orvieto, Province of Terni, Umbria, Italy - 24 april 2023: The facade of the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo - The magnificent rose window is the work of Andrea di Cione known as Orcagna (1354-1380), who also created the two lateral cusps which are at the same height. The mosaics in the segments of the rose window are by Piero di Puccio (1388), although much restored, and depict 4 doctors of the church: Sant'Agostino, San Gregorio Magno, San Girolamo and Sant'Ambrogio. The 12 aedicules on the sides of the rose window (six on each side) are by Petruccio di Benedetto da Orvieto (1372-1388), while the corresponding statues placed inside them and depicting 12 prophets are by various late fourteenth and fifteenth century artists.

Italy - Umbria, Orvieto: The Duomo di Orvieto is a large 14th century Roman Catholic cathedral situated in the town of Orvieto, central Italy. The building was constructed under the orders of Pope Urban IV to commemorate and provide a suitable home for the Corporal of Bolsena, a miracle which is said to have occurred in 1263 in the nearby town of Bolsena, when a traveling priest who had doubts about the truth of transubstantiation found that his Host was bleeding so much that it stained the altar cloth. The cloth is now stored in the Chapel of the Corporal inside the cathedral.
