Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Cathedral - Clermont-Ferrand, Auvergne, Puy-de-Dôme, France

Work began on current-day Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption Cathedral in 1248. It stands upon the site of former churches, as can be seen from the crypt. It took seven centuries to complete, including lengthy stoppages in the work. The cathedral stands out through the use of Volvic volcanic stone, of which this work represented the first-ever wide-scale use. This anthracite-coloured masterpiece highlights a unique set of stained glass windows and mural paintings.

It was built over holy tombs laid waste by Norman invaders and today houses the 12th-century Virgin of Orcival icon, the focus of Ascension Day pilgrimages since the 6th century. Inside, take time to admire carved capitals on top of the graceful stone pillars, and the shadowy crypt.

Floral and geometric patterns of black volcanic stone are smoothly set in its peachy sandstone. Its exterior playfully combines neoclassical columns, terracotta tiles and medieval reliefs.
