$Venice, Italy - February 11, 2024: The Carnival of Venice (Italian: Carnevale di Venezia; Venetian: Carneval de Venèsia) is an annual festival held in Venice, Italy, famous throughout the world for its elaborate costumes and masks. The Carnival ends on Shrove Tuesday (Martedì Grasso or Mardi Gras), which is the day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday (February-March).\nThe Carnival traces its origins to the Middle Ages, existing for several centuries until it was abolished in 1797. The tradition was revived in 1979, and the modern event now attracts approximately 3 million visitors annually.$

Potosi, Bolivia - December 21, 2018: Arch and mask at the National Mint of Bolivia (Casa de la Moneda) building, in the historic center of Potosi, (Bolivia). The mask is one of the symbols of Potosi, it was created in 1850 by French artist 1850 Eugenio Martínez Mulón but what or who it represents remains a mystery. Potosi is one of the highest cities in the world at 4,090 meters, and sits at the foot of the Cerro de Potosí or Cerro Rico (rich mountain), named like this because of its huge amounts of silver that made the region the major supplier of silver for the Spanish Colonial Empire, and a very wealthy city with exquisite colonial churches and monasteries, administration buildings, schools and universities. Silver is still extracted today. Potosi’s historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
