Today, because of overfishing in certain areas, White Pelicans are forced to fly long distances to find food. Great white pelicans are exploited for many reasons. Their pouch is used to make tobacco bags, their skin is turned into leather, the guano is used as fertiliser, and the fat of young pelicans is converted into oils for traditional medicine in China and India. Human disturbance, loss of foraging habitat and breeding sites, and pollution are all contributing to the decline of the Great White Pelican.

The great white pelican, also known as the rosy pelican or eastern white pelican, is a large white waterbird with a wingspan of up to nine feet. It is the second largest pelican in the world, and is native to southeastern Europe, Africa, and western Asia. Captured this bird while travelling in Indroda Park.

Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe: brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis occidentalis) - Brown pelicans are excellent swimmers, but their gait on land appears clumsy. Their long wings make brown pelicans extremely durable and graceful fliers, and groups of brown pelicans are often seen flying in formations just above the surface of the water. It is a common resident in the southern Bahamas, the Greater Antilles, and locally in the northern Lesser Antilles, east of Montserrat. Uncommon to rare across the rest of the Antilles, with a few birds roaming between the islands. Migrants nesting in North America increase numbers locally mainly from November to February. The brown pelican is the official state bird of the US state of Louisiana and is depicted in the seal of Louisiana feeding three chicks.
