The women who live in more traditional parts of the Andes wear a large triangular woven cloth to carry their daily supplies, their items from the market and even small children. The aguaya meaning ‘woven blanket’ has been used in the Andean cultures across Peru, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador and Columbia for thousands of years. The arid desert conditions along the coast of Peru have allowed for the preservation of these dyed textiles which have been found and dated back to almost 6,000 years old. \n\nTraditionally Andean people in these regions would have used these fabrics to symbolise their social status, wealth and affiliations. They were also uniquely woven by tribes people where the blankets would have been based on the materials origin and their tribes spiritual and metaphysical beliefs. The threads of the patterns woven all held a ‘vibration’ carrying colour and patterns to depict cosmological and symbolic messages within the visual appearance of the weave. Originally the thread used for textiles were spun from indigenous plants and cottons as well as alpaca and llama wool.
