Königsbergbreen is a glacier in Sabine Land at Spitsbergen, Svalbard. The glacier has a length of about seven kilometers, and is tributary to Hayesbreen. A nearby mountain is Jebensfjellet.\nA glacier is a persistent body of dense ice that is constantly moving under its own weight. A glacier forms where the accumulation of snow exceeds its ablation over many years, often centuries. Glaciers slowly deform and flow under stresses induced by their weight, creating crevasses, seracs, and other distinguishing features. They also abrade rock and debris from their substrate to create landforms such as cirques and moraines. Glaciers form only on land and are distinct from the much thinner sea ice and lake ice that forms on the surface of bodies of water.

Arctic spring in south Spitsbergen. Around the fjord Hornsund.
Here in Spitsbergen, we can see a magnificent view of the Hornsund Fjord across what seems to be a black sand beach. However, this unusual sandscape was not visible 5 years ago. Due to climate change, the massive glaciers that once covered this section of land have melted, thereby leaving behind a shoreline of black soils and rocks. Despite the sad story, this brand new beach makes for a beautiful foreground with various arctic tide pools and ice sheets scattered across the ground.

Main reason glaciers have begun to melt is because of human activity. The rising temperature of the Earth is the primary reason glaciers have started to melt more, and this climate change can be directly tied back to human activity. Glaciers are practically on the edge of extinction. \nCarbon dioxide emissions are one big culprit. The mass amounts of CO2 and other greenhouse gases produced by human business, transportation, deforestation, and fossil fuel usage, rise into the air where they stop the heat from the sun from bouncing back out to space. As a result, temperatures rise, and glaciers melt.\nAnother reason for ice melt is the warming of the oceans. These large bodies of water absorb 90% of the Earth's total warmth, meaning that sea ice floating in the ocean are subject to higher temperatures and naturally melt as a result.\nHuman activity is not responsible for all the causes of glacier melt. In some areas, complex interactions between wind and ocean circulation patterns have helped to push naturally occurring warm water closer to the edge of the ice. Still, as a result of all the broader climate change effects, glaciers are rapidly melting with huge chunks falling off into the sea, while elsewhere the ice begins to retreat to land. \nThe biggest and most notable impact of these glaciers melting is in the rise of sea level. In total the sea has risen by 2.7 centimeters since the 60s and the world's glaciers still contain enough to raise the ocean by another half a meter, which could directly threaten many cities in coastal regions. As a result of these rising sea levels, coastal erosion has also increased.
